Port International Bananas celebrates almost 30 years of partnership with Fairtrade Germany

For almost 30 years, Port International Bananas has enjoyed a close partnership with Fairtrade Germany. What began in 1997 with the first Fairtrade banana in Germany has now developed into a strong, value-based partnership that has helped to shape the market in a sustainable way. We look back with pride on our shared success story and look forward to a sustainable future!

The dawn of a new era

Almost 30 years ago, we began working with Fairtrade Germany—a partnership that has developed into a successful relationship of which we are particularly proud today.

We knew right from the start that Fairtrade was a perfect fit for us. That’s why we brought the first Fairtrade banana to Germany in 1997, setting a milestone in the history of trade. What began as a strong conviction has grown over time into a trusting, long-term partnership – based on shared values, responsibility throughout the entire supply chain, and a clear commitment to sustainable development.

Our commitment to Fairtrade

To underscore our commitment to Fairtrade, Mike Port, CEO of Port International, became a member of the Supervisory Board of Fairtrade Germany in 2024. There, he actively promotes innovative and sustainable projects that strengthen fair trade structures, support small farmers, and advance environmental responsibility throughout the entire supply chain.

“I was particularly impressed by Dieter Overath’s tireless commitment and a visit to our small farmers in Peru with a delegation led by Claudia Brück. There, we passed around Peruvian beer in a worn plastic cup. Moments like these are more than just anecdotes: they are human building blocks that, over time, create a stable house. Fairtrade enriched me during my time in fruit import operations. I am happy to be part of the supervisory board of Fairtrade Germany today!”

Fairtrade as an integral part of the market

Fairtrade is now an integral part of the European market—especially in the banana segment. As Karlsson Port, Managing Director of Port International, emphasizes:

“Fairtrade has become an indispensable part of the market. Fairtrade has undergone impressive development, particularly in the banana sector, and now occupies shelf space throughout Europe. We will continue to promote Fairtrade products in the future and are proud of our contribution to the Fairtrade success story.”

We look forward to continuing to work with Fairtrade to promote fair trade and sustainable development, thereby taking responsibility for the industry!
