San Miguel de Brasil – cooperation becomes real partnership

What once began as a successful collaboration has developed into a long-term partnership characterized by shared values, trust and a commitment to fairness and sustainability. We have been able to count the San Miguel de Brasil cooperative among our exclusive partners since the beginning of 2025 and look forward to many more years together!

New in the Exclusive Partner Programme

We have been working successfully with San Miguel de Brasil since 2018, developing not only a friendship but also a deep partnership. The cooperative from Ecuador stands for banana cultivation that combines social justice, ecological diversity and economic stability in a unique way, which is why we are all the more proud to have been able to count them among our exclusive partners since the beginning of 2025.

Strong roots, clear values

San Miguel de Brasil was founded in 2003 by a committed farmers’ organization and has been Fairtrade-certified since 2006. Today, the cooperative consists of 68 small and medium-sized producers with an average area under cultivation of 7.14 hectares. What unites them is their common goal: agriculture that is not only economically viable, but also strengthens the community and protects the environment.

Fairtrade as a foundation

San Miguel de Brasil only exports Fairtrade bananas – both organic and conventional. Every week, the cooperative delivers an average of 15,000 packages of organic Fairtrade bananas and 2,160 packages of conventional Fairtrade bananas to international markets.

The premiums generated through Fairtrade trade are invested directly in local social projects, including measures for medical care, the expansion of local infrastructure and occupational health and safety programs. This focus on the common good makes San Miguel de Brasil a model for social progress through trade.

Agriculture as an ecosystem

What particularly distinguishes San Miguel de Brasil is its consistent commitment to ecological sustainability. Over 80% of the fincas are considered genuine agro-ecosystems, which means that in addition to banana cultivation, there are diverse habitats for domesticated and wild animal and plant species. This biodiversity is not only protected, but actively promoted in order to enable a balanced interaction with the natural environment.

A partnership with prospects

San Miguel de Brasil is an example of what we want to achieve with our Exclusive Partner Program: Stable partnerships that ensure long-term quality, strengthen social responsibility and focus on environmental awareness.

San Miguel de Brasil not only supplies us with high-quality bananas – we are also linked by a partnership based on mutual trust, respect for people and nature and a shared understanding of sustainability.
