Peru – How Sustainable Banana Cultivation Can Make a Difference

Peru. A country of immense diversity and unparalleled beauty in the heart of the South American continent. Despite being home to world-renowned landmarks such as Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines, rich in rainforests and cloud forests, and boasting an incredibly diverse flora and fauna, many people overlook just how much this small country has to offer. Few are aware that, after India and China, Peru is a major supplier of both conventional and organic Fairtrade bananas sold in Europe.

The Secret to Peruvian Bananas

Our exclusive partners on the ground, with whom we have been working since 2015, benefit from the region’s dry climate and reliable water supply from the Andes, which allows their bananas to thrive. The dry climate protects the growing bananas from fungal infestations and other diseases that commonly occur in more humid cultivation areas.

Our partners take the cultivation process, as well as the subsequent packaging and shipping, very seriously. The entire supply chain is carefully managed, from the country of origin to the northern European market, as our producers specialise in this region. Great importance is placed on the purity of the product and the use of good agricultural practices that help protect our environment. Conveyor belts? Not here. Our partners harvest and pack the bananas entirely by hand, with great passion and love for the product.

On over 750 hectares of land, more than 700 small-scale farmers grow organic bananas and organic Fairtrade bananas for the European market. These are hand-harvested, sorted, washed, and prepared for transport by our exclusive partners on-site, before being transported within a few hours to the nearby port of Paita.

On-Site Quality Control

With the support of our quality assurance company, Siexport, the quality of our bananas is guaranteed on-site. Even the smallest defects are analysed, and swift solutions are found. The seven employees act as our eyes and ears on the ground, ensuring seamless traceability throughout the production process.

Thanks to the excellent communication between our colleagues in Peru and Hamburg, challenges can be addressed quickly and efficiently.

Sustainability in Banana Cultivation

Sustainability is a key focus for banana cultivation in Peru and for our exclusive partners. With over 20 years of experience in the production of organic bananas, they ensure one of the most sustainable farming methods available. To take a further step into the future, several sustainability projects have been implemented over the past few years. For instance, a water project has been introduced, where the water used to wash the bananas is recycled for the irrigation of native neem trees. These trees are highly effective at storing CO₂ and are used in both medicine and agriculture.

Thanks to the Fairtrade premium, which is also used for similar initiatives, cooperatives can continue investing in a better future.

Exclusive Partner Programme

The value of long-term collaboration and its potential to make a lasting impact is evident in our partnerships in Peru. Our purchase volumes provide producers with planning security, allowing them to benefit from mutual trust. This special relationship enables us to offer our customers a truly unique product. From the beginning, Port International has supported the farmers in improving the local agricultural conditions. Inspired by this successful model, we have set ourselves the goal of further expanding and developing the cooperatives.

Years of experience in banana cultivation have shown us that fostering long-term partnerships can truly make a difference and create lasting progress.
